This story is, as most stories about Fratelli turn to be, a fascinating tale worthy of the telling. With a broad sway of the story fabric woven with the threads coloured with tenacity, vineyard wisdom, humour, heavenly intervention, a modicum of luck and a grape called Sangiovese, it certainly has the potential to end up  a story of many twists and turns.

Fratelli’s great story is that it takes various cuttings of a parochial red grape from the temperate environs of Tuscany and central Italy, with a 2000 year history of evolution and creation, and plants them smack bang in the middle of the unique micro climates of her 3 vineyard sites set over 240 acres in Akluj, Maharashtra.  And hey presto!! Magic happens.

This is Piero Masi’s Muse, and the result of those threads woven is a thrilling representation of all that is good and possible in Indian winemaking and in the potential of the varied Akluj terroir. In the end, the work done by Piero over the last 8 years since the original Sangiovese Grosso clones arrived in Akluj, has resulted in five currently available interpretations of a Sangiovese based wine. And to be honest here folks, they all absolutely thrill the palate now, yet have you holding your breath in anticipation of what is to come..

Is Fratelli’s Sangiovese a good as Chianti is not a question I will entertain.  What can be asked in the greater conversation is, can Fratelli wine stand up and be judged against her international peers… Surely yes!!  And in this case, Fratelli can stand up proudly and show the world that a quintessential Italian winemaker of nearly 60 vintages of experience, can bring the very best knowledge of Tuscany and Super Tuscany and deliver to the world a whole new dimension in Sangiovese artistry. Desi style!

What you will find in your glass.

Sangiovese Bianco Fratelli makes the only white Sangiovese in Asia and to put it simply it is just a big glass of happiness.. A delicious mouthful of soft white fruit and a coconut cream lift with good medium body weight and a finish of Fratelli’s signature crunchy acid backbone.. This is certainly one for your glass everyday.

Sangiovese Rosso,  is everything you tend to want to gravitate to when you want a glass of easy drinking wine . As I always say Don’t think it; drink it!  Spicy red berry fruit with a slightly herbaceous lift and a whiff of smokiness entice the nose which all lead onto a delightfully fresh mouthful of spiced red fruit with good texture and finish .

Vitae Sangiovese . Single vineyard Sangiovese.. This showcases all that is good and possible in the Fratelli vineyards. A single plot of Sangiovese from Fratelli’s highest vineyard at Garwad, Old French oak for 6 months  and the resultant wine is a wonderful amalgamation of bright red fruit and peppery spice with delicious ripe fruit flavours and oodles of texture on the finish. Impressive indeed!

MS Red, a blend of its parts of Sangiovese Cabernet Franc Shiraz. This is the result of a wine making tryst of sorts between Piero Masi and Steven Spurrier, the iconic British wine expert and global wine guru. The object was to create a wine that identified with its Indian roots but expressed itself in an international guise. The result is a very classy wine without pretence. Lots of moorish flavour and texture fill the glass with a deliciously endearing finish. Super enjoyable

Sette, Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon, Super Tuscan, Super Indian, Super wine. I stand on my soap box and spruik loud as loud as can, in short, Sette is one of India’s finest wine creations to date.. Drink it and discover it for yourself.

I really believe as others do ,that Sangiovese has surely found a new home in India. My job, your job , our job is to embrace it, drink it, love it and tell the story to the world…  Be sure to mention Masi’ s muse from Akluj when you do!

Cheers Craig
